1) What was the significance of the Harlem Renaissance?
The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement that began in the 1920s and it was the beginning of African Americans finding their place, voice, and status in America. The movement itself was a chance for the African American people to be distinguished for their roles that they did and to look and be able to say that their people did that.
2) Who were some of the important figures (and what they were famous for) during the Harlem Renaissance?
Some important figures include Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Judge; Zora Neil Hurston, a distinguished actor and writer; Louis Armstrong, a famous jazz musician, and Langston Hughes, a very influential poet and writer during this period.
3) In the Poem, Mother to Son by Langston Hughes, what is the message (make sure you included the "why")?
The message of the poem is to show that the African Americans have finally made progress in a pro-white society, but that they should be vigilant of what is to come later on down the road. The African Americans should continue on making things better for their community, as a mother might encourage her child to succeed.
